Hidden Animal Artwork
In-Class Activity: For this activity, we participated in a creative exercise where we crafted a "hidden" animal artwork. To begin, we crafted special red glasses that would assist us in seeing the hidden animals within the final piece. Using the technique of drawing an image upside down, we sketched our safari animals. It was essential to use a light blue colored pencil for the base drawing to achieve the desired "hidden" effect. Personally, I chose to draw a hippo for my project because it is my favorite animal. Once our animal drawing was complete, we proceeded to hide it using warm colors and different patterns. The best part of the project was when we wore the red glasses, the warm colors would cancel out, allowing us to clearly see the animal drawn in the cool blue color. Additionally, I included a notecard at the bottom of the frame containing three clues about what animal I chose.
Extension Activity: Students can create a short informational presentational poster about their animals, including details about their habitat, diet, and unique characteristics. Without showing pictures or names of the animals. This activity would further reinforce the integration of science into the art lesson and provide an opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of the safari animals they are incorporating into their artwork. It also allows students to practice writing and presenting skills.
