Paper Weaving

In-Class Activity: Paper Weaving is a hands-on activity that combines art, visual perception, and Op Art techniques that we learned about before beginning our project. We folded a piece of paper in half and cut lines from the fold to a stopping point. In our second project we made our lines curvy, which allowed for various shapes and patterns. Then we cut strips from a different paper and weave them through the first piece, creating an optical illusion effect. As we weaved we observed how the colors and patterns interact, resulting in the illusion of movement or depth. This engaging activity enhances fine motor skills, and creativity, and introduces students to the concept of optical illusions through simple techniques.

Extension Activity: To integrate math into this activity, students can explore concepts such as symmetry, geometry, and measurements when creating curved lines and patterns. Emphasizing measurements during the cutting process reinforces the symmetrical aspects of their designs. By discussing how changes in measurements or curves can affect the symmetry and visual perception of the final artwork, students gain an understanding of the mathematical principles behind their artistic creations.
