Clay Tiles
Descriptions : During this activity, we discovered how to craft clay tiles using the slab method. We explored both additive and subtractive techniques to create unique designs. We began with drawing images that we wanted to add to our slab. I drew a peace sign, a fish, a cat, and a flower. Next, we kneaded and rolled out the clay, then we traced a square stencil onto it, and cut it with a sharp wooden dowel. We then used the remaining clay to create our symbols, and I chose a cat with sunglasses. After scoring and slipping both pieces, we pressed them together, smoothed out the edges with water, and used clay tools to carve out designs. I carved fish bones, “MEOW”, a fish, and a “cool cat”. Afterward, we painted them to add more color and detail, and I went all in! Extension Activity : This craft would be a fun approach to creating ornaments from student projects.
